Library Programs, Books Projects, and More

Here are a few ideas for what I want to accomplish this summer during the course to prepare for next year.

  • First, get a solid curriculum plan like this one from Powell Co Schools (I currently use my Google Calendar):
  • Skype an author - I think the kids would absolutely love this however it will require a lot of planning and preparation
  • Natalie Kinsey Warnock offers a new curriculum for learning local history through storytelling that I want to look into and our school has some money set aside for programs like this
  •  Digital storytelling project
  • Google Earth Webquest for library (maybe students locate and do a small amount of research on famous libraries of the world)
  • Wordle book ads - and other ideas from this Readingtech wiki:
  • Use One True Media or Animoto to create the video/slideshow of this year’s Red Clovers, new books in the library, or DCF books to add to the library website - use this experience to do a project with students to create Book Trailers
  • Set up my 6th Grade class in Edu 2.0 or try a Thinkquest project
  • I wanted to use VoiceThread for a poetry project this year, but there is a cost

  1. Wow great list Stephanie! I love the idea of using Wordle for book ads. I used Animoto with my 6th grade class this year for book trailers. We are still trying to finish up a couple before the year is over. Field trips and such have eaten up too much of my library class time! I am also interested in a digital storytelling project. I thought the photo stories on the YWP were fantastic. I have also used Skype at NBGS and the students loved it. Looking forward to talking to you this summer during our class.

    1. I am experiencing the same struggles trying to finish up projects at the end of the year! The YWP photo stories are great. Posting a picture and having students write about it online would be a good writing project even without the audio. I have heard that Skype is blocked in the SVSU, so I am glad to hear that you were able to use it. I am not sure if the SVSU is part of the Learning Network of Vermont, which I understand provides equipment for schools to use Scopia instead of Skype. The LNV Wiki: http://vtlnv.pbworks.com/w/page/4322277/FrontPage

Not sure if you know anything about LNV? I am confused about who has it and how you can get the equipment.

  2. Hi Stephanie-
You have quite a list! I like the Google Earth webquest idea- what a cool way to learn about famous libraries- especially if virtual tours are included for virtual field trips. VoiceThread would be perfect for a poetry project.I've never done one but I have seen other people's projects- it's great to hear the voices of students!

    1. My list is really ideas and I definitely need to narrow it down! It seems like there are a lot of teachers in the SVSU that use or want to use Voicethread - I wonder if we could get a District license?

  3. Quite an ambitious and impressive list! I admire your dedication to the students and teachers with whom you work! I presume you have some experience using Google Earth(?). I have been wanting to develop some astronomy tours/quests using Google Earth and am impressed with the possibilities, but I am not an experienced Google Earth user.

  4. I am not an experienced Google Earth user. My second grade class could probably show me alot! Some of them are great at navigating and they have taught each other. I have watched some tutorials and need to learn more about working with KML and KMZ files. I also wonder if there is a way to have students share files and work on them together? Hopefully in the F2F class we can learn more about it and share! I could stick with Google Earth as a goal for the summer project and I think that would fill up my time!

  5. Lots of ideas! I'm sure you'll come away from our week in the T4E classroom with a lot of projects ready to roll out in the summer. Try to prioritize, as this list of yours is long :-)

  6. I really like Vocaroo (find at vocaroo.com) for recording voice quickly and sending it to me. It is free and easy to use!
